The Hills of Tuscany: Pitigliano

While walking to our first stop (Little Jerusalem) we pause and let a procession of banner-carrying Pitigliano citizens pass (i.e. we gawk). David has already filled us in on the Italian election coming up (during bus time) and we assume this is related in some way to it.

One of many sweet little streets in Pitigliano.

We arrive at the gate of Little Jerusalem where our local guide is waiting to show us around. It's an intriguing place with a long history. There is beauty here, but much of the underground ghetto (where people lived) is hard to digest.

I wonder about the barred window (above) but all becomes clear when our guide tells us about the curfew imposed on the ghetto residents each afternoon.

We finish up the Jewish Quarter tour on a note of incredible beauty by touring the synagogue (above).

Cave Road Walk & Etruscan Ruins

Our next stop: Etruscan Ruins. Our group walks around and over and under the various features of the area like kids on a playground.

The Cave Road Walk is a highlight and a great way to end the day's tour (see right).

Opting Out Sidebar:

When on a Rick Steves' tour, participants are welcome to opt out of activities if they wish (to each her own, but I can't imagine skipping a single thing). Rita does. She skips the day and stays at La Moscadella to bask by the pool (see below). It's a good move for her (she needs the downtime), but there is a price to pay.

When we return, Texan Tony deems her a "Slacker". It's all in good fun, said with the affection we all now share. From this point on, Rita and Tony are honorary siblings. For the rest of the trip (and just like between real sibs) there is a lot of joking and teasing.  They both love it.

Last Night at La Moscadella
Dinner & Music by David & Bartender

Our last night at La Moscadella features a beautiful buffet for those of us who prefer to eat in tonight (dinner is officially on our own). Rita & I can't think of a better way to spend our last evening here...unless, we can enjoy a performance of live music with our wine and dinner.

David goes to great lengths to make it happen. He and another member of his group, Bartender entertain us after dinner. Have a listen to a few moments of the fabulous performance Bartender gave us.

Lovely, Chris enjoying a cuppa in the main dining area while waiting for Bartender to take the floor.

Sarah & Tony from Texas enjoy the performance by Bartender.
